JEJU NATIONAL MUSEUM, JEJU, SOUTH KOREA

    Friday, August 31st, 2007

Strawberry BinsooIf you’re interested in learning a little more about the island we live on then the Jeju National Museum is a place to do it at. Set in lush, palm tree lined grounds, it’s well kept and uncluttered exhibits leave the visitor with a satisfying historical overview of times past.

Upon buying a ticket (1,000won with no Alien Card discount this time) and entering the central hall the first thing you’ll notice is the stained glass stretched out across the ceiling. Far from being a pretty map of the island, it actually tells the story of the ‘Samseong’ or ‘three founders’ mythology. Accompanying this at ground level is a well-done diorama of Jeju Fortress. To your left the main galleries begin.

    MARADO, JEJU, SOUTH KOREA

    Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

If you want travel as far south as you can in South Korea then you’ll be finding yourself upon the tiny island of Marado. This treeless rock can feel extreme in parts, albeit a comfortable, cosy extreme that caters for the day-tripping tourist.

Walking is by far the best way to explore because the place is so small. You can get in and everywhere before tiring yourself out too much. So resist the urge to hire the golf carts upon disembarkation from the ferry. On a cart or bicycle a loop can be completed within ten minutes.
