From Jeju City Bus Terminal: Have “Driver’s License Agency” written out in Korean (운전면허시험장: I managed to find it on a bilingual map easily found in any of the tourist booths scattered throughout the island if you can’t read the text here). Once they see it, they’ll sell you a ticket and tell you which gate the bus leaves (probably gate 9). If you show the name to the driver, he’ll even let you know when to get off.

GOLDENHILL HERB FARM Herb Wellbeing Food; Herb Shop; Herb Farm

Complement a trip to Jeju Do’s oldest fishing and agricultural village by having lunch at the Goldenhill Herb Farm. Gosan Village is only 4.2km away from a delicious ‘pizza size’ Goldenhill Gold Burger.

After visiting the village and taking in the views of the small harbour and, of course, Chagwi Island (beautiful scenery and good fishing), head East. Once you arrive, don’t be put off by the downstairs area too much (they may be in the process of renovating – they may not) before heading upstairs to the log cabin-style dining area.

JejuChocartSmall hand-crafted chocolates sit arranged in two stout refrigerated cabinets. An accompanying low light casts an inviting shadow across those on show. And with a little extra luck a chef might have just delivered some fresh from the kitchens below. Owned by a professor at Halla College (who spent time in France learning her trade) JejuChocoart goes some way to satisfying those chocolate cravings.

Samdasoo FactoryWalking into a convenience store on Jeju to buy bottled water should usually have you reaching for the Samdasoo Mineral Water. Whether the large two litre bottles go home to sit in the fridge or the half litre stays with you, purchasing Samdasoo is an almost daily part of our routines - even if we don’t notice it is. So with their factory right here on the island, Jeju Life went along to investigate its back-story and find out what exactly goes into the product we drink so much of.

Brazilian flair to Jeju United, Jeju, South Korea

Irineu It’s a sunny afternoon at the Jeju United clubhouse, and after two years of watching the team as a devoted fan, I’m about to interview their Brazilian born star. The JU players are loading onto the team bus out front as I wait for Ricardo Irineu in the lobby. I’ve been told that neither he nor his Portuguese translator speaks English, so I’ve brought along my own Korean translator to decipher the Korean translation of his Portuguese. We sit on a circle of plush chairs, a row of trophies and a Jeju United flag adorning the far wall. Irineu joins us a few minutes later and the interview begins. I start by asking him to tell me about his days playing soccer in Brazil. The question is translated into Korean before Irineu’s translator gives it to him in Portuguese. Irineu nods and quietly answers. The Portuguese translator relays it to the Korean, who then passes it on to me. It’s a trilingual game of ‘telephone’ and I’m wondering how much is getting lost in translation. “Do Koreans recognize you when you’re out in public?” I ask.

An introduction to Oreums, Jeju, South Korea

Oreums When you are on the east and west sides of Jeju island you can find numerous hills that seem to mimic the kings’ and queens’ tombs of Gyeongju. These are not tombs but Oreums. Oreums are parasitic volcanos, which originated from volcanic explosions between 500,000 to two million years ago when Jeju Island was created. Oreums are a leading landmark of Jeju and they offer both beautiful sights and emotional comfort to the visitor.

Korea Baseball Hall of FameIt’s October, and that can only mean one thing for baseball fans around the world: it’s playoff time. And with baseball hysteria at fever pitch there’s no better occasion to check out a piece of Korean baseball history at the ‘Korean Pro-Baseball Hall of Fame.’

Its home is a small museum located next to Kang Chang Hak Stadium in New Seogwipo (Shinsikaji), just north of the World Cup Stadium. The museum is quite small, occupying a large room in the wing of a local sports facility. Despite its modest proportions, the museum contains interesting exhibits and memorabilia, making it well worth a visit for true baseball fans.

Halla ArboretumJust a short walk or bike ride away from downtown Shin Jeju, there is a little bit of hidden paradise. If you enjoy walking, looking at flowers and trees and maybe even breaking into a sweat, Halla Arboretum is the place for you.

Jeju Do city planners had the foresight to set aside a sizeable tract of land (15 hectares) between Gwangji and Namjosun Oreums for an educational park. All 909 species of trees and flowers are well-labelled with their Latin, English and Korean names. This means that if you want or need to learn the name of, say, a common tree around Jeju, this place allows you to do just that.
