Saunas and Jimjilbangs, Jeju, South Korea
After a long winter was almost over, advice from a friend and a visit to a Japanese onsen finally prompted me to check out the world of saunas and jimjilbangs on Jeju. I had been missing my bathtub in Canada and my muscles were sore, but I was feeling a bit shy about getting naked in front of a lot of local strangers. The morning after my first trip to the Deabo Sauna in Sin-Jeju, however, I woke up without one of the chronic headaches I’d been getting for the last two weeks. My body and mind felt tension-free and clear. I danced better in class. I was hooked.
The Jeju Aroma Superdome Nightclub, Jeju, South Korea
The Jeju Aroma Super Dome Nightclub (which opened in Dec 2007) is perhaps the flashiest nightclub on Jeju. When you first enter it may seem a lot like other Korean nightclubs: there is a large low-lit area with tables (that seat about 1200 people), pumping music, and a lot of staff. It has 4 floors (with 100 small rooms and 10 large rooms) and a good-sized dance floor up by the stage. But that’s where the major similarities end. The design of the interior is impressive to say the least. Behind the main stage are high folding metal walls that look like they belong to the Dome in Zion in The Matrix. They have bright lasers shooting from the stage, a large fountain, and a smaller stage that lowers DJs and bands from the ceiling. And then there’s the Super Dome itself.
La Vie bar, Jeju, South Korea
Whether you come for the music, the home-cooked meals, or to meet new and interesting people over a beer or two, most agree that La Vie is a comfortable place to hang out and feel at home. Look around the place and first you may notice the comfortable stance of the patrons and hear laughter in response to an animated story, along with the full bookshelf (La Vie’s open library), houseplants and artwork on the walls. One patron Eric Karrandjas says of La Vie, “They are really friendly people and I always feel welcome when I’m there.” Another regular, Joey Rositano says he comes to La Vie “for the stories and the good company.”
Jeju Magic World, Jeju, South Korea
Attending a Chinese acrobatic circus may not be the first thing that springs to mind when considering tourist activities on Jeju, but it is not to be missed. The brilliant Magic World show includes acrobatics, a stunt motorcycle ring, and even kangaroo boxing! Between excited bites of popcorn, I was thrilled by the colourful costumes, sensational music, and the incredible skill and choreography of these performers.
